About Hi Ka Flash

An overview of the app.

Hi Ka Flash is designed to accelerate your learning of the basic Japanese kana (hiragana and Katakana) using flashcards, quizzes and audio recordings of native Japanese speakers.

Kana refers to the system of syllabic writing used for Japanese and has two forms, hiragana and katakana. In addition there is the English counterpart, romaji, the "western" pronunciation for the kana syllable. Each syllable has one of each of the hiragana, katakana and romaji. For example the syllable "ki" in romaji pairs up with both "き" in hiragana and "キ" in katakana. There are 46 basic kana, which is to say there are 46 hiragana, the 46 matching katakana and the 46 romaji pronunciations.

Unlike other applications that have you work with either hiragana or katakana, Hi Ka Flash helps you to learn both kana and their romaji at the same time. Using this process you'll find you can distinguish the different characters with greater ease and efficiency.

Kana List is the first part of Hi Ka Flash and presents you with the syllables in order and as learned by Japanese children. It shows the romaji and it's hiragana and katakana counterparts. Tap on a character to hear it pronounced by a native Japanese speaker. You can select a male or female voice to tap to hear, and with a double-tap, you can hear the counterpart.

Flashcard is the second part of Hi Ka Flash. A kana character is presented to you, tap the flashcard to see the hiragana, katakana and romaji answer as well as a "tap to hear" button. Shake your iPhone or iPod touch to randomly select a different flashcard.

Quiz is the final part of the Hi Ka Flash learning system. One of either a hiragana, katakana or romaji character is presented to you along with four answers. Answers are hiragana, katakana and romaji – you have to know which is the correct answer. By introducing all three elements at once Hi Ka Flash helps you identify and learn the kana and its counterparts with greater ease and efficiency.
